An invitation to a BBQ can elicit so many, and different, delectable memories. You may be transported back to your uncle’s backyard as a kid where the steamy, too-hot-to-bite hotdogs and corn, freshly picked from the grill, scorched your fingers. Or you may be brought to just last weekend when your best friend’s patio was transformed from a cityscape roof to a fairy-light twinkling, cocktail flowing epicure’s dream. We were lucky enough score an invite to Avery McCann’s annual rooftop BBQ and escape the New York City summer heat in style.
A natural at entertaining, Avery watched her mother host everything from casual dinners to jaw-dropping galas as a young girl. Over the years, she has defined her own approach to entertaining, taking cues from her mother while also adapting to reflect the style of a twenty-something millennial. The result is effortlessly chic and beautifully understated.
For her casual rooftop get-together with friends, Avery opted for a buffet-style BBQ. Instead of stacking dinnerware at the head of the table, she elegantly set each place. She reminds us that you can, and should, set a stunning table for any occasion and at any age. Using our Viper Reversible Placemat in Coral, she created a vibrant focal point for her table. Our Spectrum Napkins were cleverly tied in a knot for a casual look, and everything was pulled together with our Vague Highball Glasses in White. Avery notes, “When entertaining outside, I try to make sure everything can be cleaned simply so I don’t worry about spills or stains. Both the placemats and napkins look beautiful and can be wiped down and washed very easily. I don’t compromise on aesthetic though!”.
Of course, the party wouldn’t be complete without a signature cocktail! Coincidentally, the BBQ fell on National Margarita Day. Avery featured cucumber and jalapeño margaritas; the cool green cocktail looked delightfully refreshing in the Vague Glasses she chose.
And because no summer soirée is complete without a crisp bottle of Rosé, Avery’s current obsession is Summer in a Bottle from local Hampton’s winery Wolffer Estate. “I love Wolffer Estate, this Rosé really embodies summer for me. It’s fresh and light, the perfect wine for a summer party.” Avery splurged for the BBQ with Summer in a Bottle ($25/bottle) but she also loves their Estate Rosé ($18/bottle).
The festive floral design on the bottle worked perfectly with the colors of the table and the flowers that Avery purchased that morning from the flower market. She created loose arrangement in small bud vases, complimenting her already relaxed feel. The best part, the flowers cost under $100!
As her guests enjoyed the food and drink and marveled at her fantastic setting, Avery was able to mingle and relax while entertaining. The most important part of hosting according to Avery, “is to be able to enjoy the company of my friends and have a good time”. The sun set on another successful rooftop BBQ and, with drink in hand, Avery took in the warm summer night and started planning her next event.
