Entertaining outdoors is always a fun occasion. After all, just being surrounded by the full height of summer, setting the table can be as imaginative and creative as you want it to be. This year, Kim updated her outdoor space and picked up a new parasol-style umbrella from One Kings Lane. Its eye-catching black and white stripe inspired us to take this classic color combination to the table.
When working with a tight palette or color combination, it’s important to mix in an assortment of scale and texture. Here, we emphasized the look by layering a variety of scale with a focus on geometric shapes. For the backdrop, we decided on a black and white zipper stripe fabric. The juxtaposition of the small-scale graphic pattern layered with the wide stripes of the umbrella added a healthy measure of contrast to the table. To layer atop, we chose our Jengaa Placemat in Black. We especially love how the bamboo beads are arranged in a simple, geometric pattern, which provides subtle distinction to the look. Additionally, we changed the orientation of each placemat so that each setting felt slightly different.
To break up the stripes, we selected Kim’s Missoni Bianco Nero plates. It features a striking black and white floral pattern that feels summery and lighthearted. While the addition of Juliska’s Black Glass Goblets added a flourish of formality to the otherwise casual tablescape.
Continuing the theme, we paired our Jengaa Napkin in Black and Bubblegum with our Flamingo Napkin Ring. The updated take on a summer stripe with its contrast zig-zag edge combined with the vibrant and playful napkin ring was the perfect way to introduce a third color – pink!
For our flowers, bright pink peonies were all we needed to use to create a lasting impression. We improvised and placed simple, glass vases into white, ceramic lanterns to keep with the theme. With the table complete, here’s to more languorous summer days!
