Designer Q&A

Caroline Rafferty

Caroline’s approach to design speaks to her love of the arts, her intuitive business sense, and her unique first-hand experiences with many aspects of creating the built environment. In 2008, she co-founded Carolina George, an interior design firm with its own line of fabrics and furniture also in New York. And after moving to Palm Beach with her family, Caroline established Caroline Rafferty Interiors in 2015. Her interiors are characterized by rich color palettes; thoughtful, collected furnishings and art; bold patterns and textures; a mix of time periods; and a strong emphasis on ethically sourced materials.

Most recently, she’s decided to parlay her design ethos into opening The Grand Tour with her design-savvy mother Julie, using as inspiration her grandmother Dearie, who was a tastemaker impassioned by kindness and generosity.

A good dinner party… Includes great friends, good food, and laughter. I also like sending my guests home with small treats, whether that be beautifully packaged candy or a personalized gift that can also be used in lieu of place cards. Sugarfina’s alcohol-infused candies make for a great night cap.

My favorite guests… Are my closest friends and family. They are my favorite people!

I always serve… A good mix of options. More and more, I have gone for buffet-style serving. This avoids any issues with dietary restrictions. I offer plenty of veggies, salads, and fish or meat.

A good host or hostess never… Cleans up during the party. This kills the vibe!

You will receive a repeat invitation if… You tell good jokes.

The most memorable party I have ever thrown/attended… It’s cliché but it was definitely my wedding. We spent the most magical week in Jamaica with all of our favorite people. We had the entire resort to ourselves and each night was a build-up to the main event. Nearly 10 years later, I still hear from our friends that they want to do it all over again!

The elements that go into my tablescapes are… Lots of Kim Seybert of course. I especially love her Cosmos Placemat in Emerald and the Fly Away Napkin Rings. I also like to use objets and surprising elements as centerpieces like beautiful boxes, small sculptures, crystals, or unusual containers filled with flowers— my favorites are ranunculus. I try to keep the tablescape organic and often add and take away until the last minute.

Paper or email invites… Depends on the event and the crowd. For more formal events that are planned with plenty of time in advance, I use paper. Email is easier on guests and me so that is usually my default.

My favorite hostess gift… I try and bring something out of the ordinary. I love Kim Seybert cocktail napkins and coasters. The emoji ones are so much fun and everyone loves them—including the kids.

When the last guest leaves I… Clean, clean, clean—often to music. I don’t like going to bed with a mess waiting for me in the morning. My go-to soundtrack: Stevie Wonder, The Beatles and Coldplay.
