Not to dampen the holiday cheer of those who would expect me to throw a lavish Christmas soirée and dinner party, but I must confess that I most often travel with my friends around the holidays. This year we are going to a spa retreat to Miraval in Tuscon, Arizona. But that doesn’t mean that I am skipping Christmas entirely.
In fact, just before my trip I am going to my country house in the Hamptons for a few days to relax and unwind and to also give my house a festive zhush.
I really get to embrace the spirit of the season when I am in the country. I like to visit the local stores and pick up decorations such as wreaths from East Hampton Gardens and potted holly shrubs from nearby nurseries. When it comes to Christmas decorations, I stick to traditional colors and motifs – red, green and gold.
I am using various shades of green this year inspired by my freshly painted green front door. I’ve asked East Hampton Florist to create a garland for my mantle and dinner table. It is deliciously elegant, made from olive leaves and seeded eucalyptus branches. It smells divine too!
I’ve asked my friends and neighbors (and their dogs, so my Bella will have playmates) out East to come to dinner for a tree trimming party. We will be decorating the tree with vintage ornaments I found antiquing over the years, alongside some of my own designs.
We will place all our Secret Santa gifts under the tree to be exchanged and opened after dinner while a rotation of holiday standards from Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and the Jackson 5 play in the background.
I’ll be using the Kim Seybert Wood Bead Placemats under Jaune de Chrome Cream Scale Gold Finition dinnerware, complementing the country rustic feel of my faux bois dining chairs. Textured linen Brushstroke Plaid Napkins with red, gold & silver make for a great backdrop for our Pine Sprig Napkin Rings, made with pine, sugared berries, pinecones and bells.
After the main course, I’ll serve dessert in the sitting room so we can watch one of my all time favorite movies Dr. Zhivago. I love all the wintry romantic scenes and hopefully we will have some snowfall in the Hamptons so my Bella can run around in the snow.
